The 2010 Mackenzie High Country Muster set out from Single Hill Station near Burkes Pass in February, taking riders through stations over 4 days to nearby Albury.
The Muster is similar to the Otago Heritage Trust Cavalcade & provides a good training ride for riders participating in the Cavalcade. It is run by a small sub-committee of the the Aoraki Western Riding Club who just recently held the inaugural Whitehorse Cowboy Challenge and this is their fourth Muster.
This year saw 30 riders ride out on a cold, drizzly Wednesday morning bound for Shenley Station where the first nights camp was made.
On Thursday, they rode through Shenley Station towards Athlone Station where the nights
entertainment in the woolshed by Cameron Scott was a feature.
Friday, the riders left for neighbouring Ranui Station but had a challenging days riding to reach there. Along the ridges allowed brilliant views on a stunning day for all to see. That night a mystery bottle auction was held, this year raising funds to donate to the local CCS Disability group. The night proved successful with $800 raised. This money is going to be used for the Independant Games being held in April at Christchurch, a huge undertaking as not only is there a team of children attending, but they also need their own caregivers to attend with them.
A hot day Saturday , riders headed towards their final destination, Albury. By night time, the weather had changed again with drizzle hanging around. But the Hoe Down held in the Albury Hall was a fitting finale to a fantastic week. A late night that night for the weary riders was a celebration of a hard weeks riding.
Many thanks to the landowners for their continued support in allowing access to their farms, to CRT for sponsorship, to the people that help make the Muster successful ie the caterers, ground crew, riding crew, entertainment.
A memorable week for everyone involved.
